Overview
In addition to the main stops, California offers other destinations that can be perfectly integrated into the route depending on the season and available time.
CATALINA ISLAND
The car-free atmosphere of Avalon, bays and hiking trails make Catalina a beautiful island spot. Ferries start in Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach and Dana Point. The camper stays on the mainland.
CHANNEL ISLAND'S NATIONAL PARK
The islands can only be reached by concessional boat, plane or private boat. Santa Cruz Island is particularly suitable for a day trip with hiking and kayaking. On the islands there are hardly any services; transport and camping must be booked in advance.
PISMO BEACH
Wide beach, pier, dunes and RV infrastructure make Pismo Beach a popular coastal stop. Oceano Dunes and Monarch Butterfly Grove are seasonal highlights; current access rules follow.
MENDOCINO
The small coastal town has historic wooden houses, galleries and paths across the cliffs. Together with Fort Bragg and Point Arena one of California's most beautiful, quieter coastal stages is created.
LAVA BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT
In the remote northeast, numerous lava tubes lead under the volcanic landscape. Helmet, light and current cave clearances are important. The place can be easily connected with Mount Shasta or Lessen, but requires a clear detour.
BURNEY IF
The wide waterfall at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is fed by sources and is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Northern California. Check access, parking and possible seasonal restrictions beforehand.
