Monterey combines marine history, a lively waterfront and one of the most famous aquariums in the world. The protected bay is also an excellent area for sea otters and whale watching.

Monterey Bay Aquarium
The aquarium shows the habitats of the Californian coast and is especially known for Kelpwald, sea otters and jellyfish.
Cannery Row
The former industrial zone is now a lively promenade with shops, restaurants and views of the bay.
Fisherman's Wharf & Pacific Grove
Boat trips start from Wharf; the coast towards Pacific Grove is ideal for walking and cycling.

Beech aquarium and boat tour early.
The bay is often foggy in the morning.
Use the Coastal Recreation Trail instead of constantly reparking.
Our recommendation
Monterey is the best base for Point Lobos, Carmel and 17-Mile Drive. Plan at least two nights if you want to combine aquarium and whale watching.
