Idaho is one of the most underrated destinations in the West. While many travelers only cross the state on their way to Yellowstone or Glacier National Park, Idaho offers an impressive variety of deep canyons, crystal clear mountain lakes, wild rivers, volcanic landscapes and charming small towns. This combination of spectacular nature and comparatively few visitors makes the state's special appeal.

Our personal highlights include the Sawtooth National Recreation Area with its majestic mountain landscapes, Shoshone Falls – also known as "Niagara of the West" – and the unique volcanic landscape of the Craters of the Moon National Monument as well as the historic towns of Wallace and City of Rocks. We also remember the numerous Scenic Byways, hidden hot springs and quiet mountain lakes.

For a varied tour we recommend the following route:

Coeur d'Alene → Sandpoint → Wallace → Silver Valley → Stanley → Sawtooth National Recreation Area → Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve → Twin Falls → City of Rocks National Reserve → Boise

For this route, you should schedule at least 10 to 14 days depending on your interests.

The ideal time to travel is between June and September. In these months, virtually all pass roads are open, the temperatures are pleasant and the conditions for hiking tours, camping and road trips are optimal. If you like it a little quieter, travel in September and additionally benefit from the first autumn colours.

Idaho is not a state that you should cross as quickly as possible – but one that you can consciously discover. The mixture of well-known natural highlights and countless hidden places makes every trip unique. Anyone who brings enough time and also leaves the main roads will experience one of the most versatile and authentic states in the American West. For campers and Fifth Wheel travelers, Idaho is therefore one of North America's most beautiful and at the same time pleasant destinations.
