Why North Dakota inspires
North Dakota is one of those states that at first underestimate many travelers – and it's exactly what makes them special. Wide prairies, colourful badlands, quiet lake landscapes and historic sites tell the story of the American West in an authentic way. Unlike many well-known national parks, you will find plenty of peace here, few crowds and a nature that has preserved its original character.
Our highlights
Our personal highlights include Theodore Roosevelt National Park with its impressive Badlands landscape, the spectacular Maah Daah Hey Trail region, the huge metal sculptures along the Enchanted Highway and the peaceful atmosphere on Lake Sakakawea. Also impressive are the historic trading sites and forts that bring to life the history of pioneers and indigenous peoples.
Recommended route
For a varied tour we recommend the following route:
Fargo → Valley City → Bismarck → Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park → Lake Sakakawea → New Town → Theodore Roosevelt National Park (North Unit) → Medora → Theodore Roosevelt National Park (South Unit) → Dickinson
For this route you should plan at least 5 to 8 days. If you like to wander or want to spend several days in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ideally plan 8 to 10 days.
Best time to visit
The best time to travel is between June and September. Then the temperatures are pleasant, all Scenic Byways are easily accessible and the conditions are ideal for hiking tours, animal watching and camping. In autumn, the golden colours of the prairie provide a very special atmosphere.
Our recommendation
North Dakota is not a state of great tourist attractions, but one of the quietest discoveries. Those who appreciate vast landscapes, authentic history and untouched nature will experience unforgettable moments here. Especially the relaxed atmosphere, open horizons and low visitor numbers make North Dakota an ideal destination for campers and Fifth Wheel travelers who want to experience the American West in its original form.
