Overview
This proposal combines comfortable supply nights with simple campgrounds and free overnight stays. After two to three self-sufficient nights at the latest, a place with fresh water and disposal is deliberately followed again. Where Boondocking with a large Fifth Wheel does not make sense, the plan remains with an official campground.
Recommended basic rhythm
Camping with service → 1–2 nights Dry Camping or Boondocking → Camping with water and dump station. In case of heat, cold or high consumption supply earlier.
Accommodation plan along the route
Type | Stage / Area | Recommendation & Supply
Camping + service | Medora | Medora Campground or Red Trail Campground with matching hook-up site. Do water, dump and shopping in front of the Grasslands.
Boondocking | Little Missouri National Grassland – South | Dispersed camping is allowed outside developed places. Use existing access roads and pitches; no toilets, no water, no garbage service.
National Park Camp | Theodore Roosevelt – North Unit | Juniper Campground for Dry Camping. Drinking water is seasonal; no dump station in the park – previously supplied in Watford City.
Boondocking | Little Missouri National Grassland – North | Only on public land and legally accessible paths. In rain, clay and scoria roads are problematic for a heavy team.
State Park Camp | Lake Sakakawea State Park | Use electrical sites, drinking water and seasonal disposal as a recreation and service stop; check details at the reservation.
Camping + service | Bismarck | Bismarck KOA or General Sibley Campground. Complete supply stop with shopping, water and dump.
State Park Camp | Grahams Island / Devils Lake | Grahams Island State Park. Electric sites and seasonal supply; good break between western Badlands area and the east.
Boondocking | Sheyenne National Grassland | Dispersed camping outside of developed campgrounds. Pay attention to private parcels, use only existing paths and do not enter on wet ground.
Camping + service | Fargo / Valley City | Lindenwood Campground or an RV park on I-94. Renew water, wastewater, laundry and supplies.
Camping | International Peace Garden | Campground in Peace Garden or Icelandic State Park. Check season, border documents, vehicle length and available connections in advance.
Important for a big Fifth Wheel
Always check Boondocking access roads first without trailer. Only use public, legally accessible and already used areas. Before each journey current blockings, fire regulations, motor vehicle use maps, ground conditions, maximum vehicle length and turning area on the official pages of BLM, US Forest Service, National Park Service, State Parks and Recreation.gov control. Taps only for filling tanks if this is expressly allowed.
Search status: August 2026. Opening hours, fees, reservations, water and dump stations can change seasonal or short term.
