Enchanted Highway

One of the most unusual street attractions in North Dakota is located in the seemingly endless prairie of North America. The Enchanted Highway connects Interstate 94 at Gladstone with the small town of Regent and is lined with huge metal sculptures on about 50 kilometres.

The artworks were created by the artist Gary Greff, who wanted to protect his native region from extinction. Today, the Enchanted Highway is considered one of the most original road trip routes in the USA and inspires visitors with creativity, humour and impressive craftsmanship.

Especially for campers, the route is a welcome change to the long journeys through the prairie.

Right at the beginning of the route, you'll find the most famous sculpture on the Enchanted Highway.

The giant flying geese have a span of over 30 meters and are considered the largest metal sculpture of this kind worldwide.

They are also the landmark of the highway.

In the early morning, the sculpture stands out especially beautifully against the sky.

A life-size deer family seems to jump across the street.

The open prairie makes the scene seem amazingly realistic.

Oversized locusts rise out of the grass and are among the most popular photo motifs for children.

A huge fish seems to jump out of a small lake.

The combination of water, sky and metal sculpture provides impressive photos.

The giant pheasants remind us of the bird world North Dakotas and are among the most detailed works of art along the route.

The entire route is excellently developed and easily accessible with large campers or Fifth Wheels. There are plenty of parking spaces available on every sculpture.

Many visitors drive only to the first or second sculpture. However, the most beautiful and sometimes largest works of art are located further south – it is worth driving the entire route to Regent.

A wide angle lens is ideal for capturing the huge dimensions of the sculptures together with the vast prairie.

Plan enough time for the individual stops – the highway lives from leisurely discovery.

Between Dickinson and Regent there are only a few gas stations and shops.

In summer, it can be very windy – safe loose objects outside the vehicle.

Many sculptures seem more impressive from close up than on photos.
