Devils Lake is the largest natural lake in North Dakotas and a true paradise for nature lovers, anglers and bird watchers. Despite its name, the lake has nothing uncanny about it – on the contrary: the vast water landscape with its islands, bays and wetlands is one of the most beautiful recreation areas in the state.
The name comes from an inaccurate translation of the Dakota term Mni Wakan, which actually means "holy" or "mystical lake", rather than "devil lake". It is particularly fascinating that the lake does not have a natural outflow. Its water level has changed continuously for centuries and has flooded entire roads and agricultural areas several times over the last decades.
