With a length of more than 280 kilometres, Lake Sakakawea is one of the largest artificial lakes in North America. The Missouri River, which has been stowed up by Garrison Dam, is today a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts, anglers and nature lovers. Despite its size, the lake seems surprisingly untouched in many places – with secluded bays, gentle hills and miles of shoreland.

The lake was named after Sakakawea (Sacagawea), the famous Shoshone woman who accompanied the Lewis and Clark expedition from 1804 to 1806 and contributed significantly to the success of the trip.

In summer, sun protection is indispensable because many shore areas offer hardly any shade.
Plan enough travel time – due to the size of the lake, individual destinations can be further apart than expected.
