Practical tips

Check reservation and shuttle rules before arrival.

Don't take trailer to hotspot parking.

Do not strengthen wildlife stalls by stopping on the road.

Save offline maps. In rural regions, national parks and in the north, mobile communications can be missing over long distances.

Never take water untested from lakes or rivers into the fresh water tank. Replenish drinking water only at released sources or prepare it professionally.

Our recommendation

Stay at least four nights and don't plan every known lake in one day. Early mornings and late afternoons are the most pleasant.

Planning this region

Alberta combines the most famous landscapes of Canadian rockies with prairie, ranchland and badlands. Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper need early reservations; outside the hotspots, travelling with large Fifth Wheel is much more relaxed.

Waterton Lakes National Park

Waterton connects prairie and Rocky Mountains in a particularly narrow space. The park is smaller and quieter than Banff, but offers dramatic mountains, lakes and good wildlife watching.

Kananaskis Country

Kananaskis offers a large mountain landscape south of Banff and seems quieter in many places. Lakes, valleys and hiking trails make the region an excellent base outside the most famous parks.
