Our personal highlights include Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Badlands National Park, Custer State Park with its impressive wildlife and Needles Highway. We also remember the fascinating cave systems of Wind Cave and Jewel Cave as well as the spectacular panoramic streets of Black Hills.

For a varied tour we recommend the following route:

Sioux Falls → Badlands National Park → Wall → Custer State Park → Mount Rushmore National Memorial → Crazy Horse Memorial → Needles Highway → Spearfish Canyon → Deadwood → Rapid City

For this route you should plan at least 7 to 10 days. If you want to do several hiking tours or explore the region in peace, you should provide 10 to 14 days.

The best time to travel is between May and September. During these months, there are pleasant temperatures for hiking tours, road trips and camping. Autumn also brings beautiful colors to the Black Hills forests, while in spring, especially many wildlife can be observed.

South Dakota is far more than a stopover on the way to the west of the United States. The combination of spectacular landscapes, historic sights, impressive panoramic roads and fascinating wildlife makes the state one of the most varied destinations in the Midwest.
