Overview
This proposal combines comfortable supply nights with simple campgrounds and free overnight stays. After two to three self-sufficient nights at the latest, a place with fresh water and disposal is deliberately followed again. Where Boondocking with a large Fifth Wheel does not make sense, the plan remains with an official campground.
Recommended basic rhythm
Camping with service → 1–2 nights Dry Camping or Boondocking → Camping with water and dump station. In case of heat, cold or high consumption supply earlier.
Accommodation plan along the route
Type | Stage / Area | Recommendation & Supply
Camping + service | Badlands / Interior | Badlands/White River KOA or Cedar Pass RV Campground. Do water and disposal before switching to Grasslands.
Boondocking | Pinnacles Dispersed Camping Area | 70 marked pitches south of Wall on Buffalo Gap National Grassland. Free, no infrastructure, 14-day limit; check for wet access.
Camping + service | Rapid City / Custer | Custer and Gulch RV Park, Heartland RV Park or similar place with Full Hook-up. Ideal base and supply stop for several Black Hill days.
Boondocking | Black Hills National Forest | Only along the marked roads on the current MVUM; a maximum of 300 ft from the permitted route. Not at Campgrounds, reservoirs or watercourses.
State Park Camp | Custer State Park | Reserve suitable campground for the total length. Drinking water and dump station are not available at every place; before entering the Scenic Roads supply.
Camping + service | Spearfish | Spearfish City Campground or Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort. Empty tanks and fill water before the journey continues on rural routes.
Dry Camping | Wind Cave / Hot Springs | Elk Mountain Campground is simple and without Dump Station. Disposal in Hot Springs or Custer; check length and seasonal operation.
Camping + service | Sioux Falls | Sioux Falls KOA or Tower Campground. Full service stop before continuing to the Plains.
Important for a big Fifth Wheel
Always check Boondocking access roads first without trailer. Only use public, legally accessible and already used areas. Before each journey current blockings, fire regulations, motor vehicle use maps, ground conditions, maximum vehicle length and turning area on the official pages of BLM, US Forest Service, National Park Service, State Parks and Recreation.gov control. Taps only for filling tanks if this is expressly allowed.
Search status: August 2026. Opening hours, fees, reservations, water and dump stations can change seasonal or short term.
